Umesh Yadav gave India an early breakthrough after their lower order helped them reach 600 for the first time in a Test innings in Sri Lanka. Having bowled India out just within an hour after lunch, Sri Lanka went to high tea on 38 for 1, with Upul Tharanga and the debutant Danushka Gunathilaka  exhibiting of silken off-side strokeplay after the quick early loss of Dimuth Karunaratne.

Swing did the player Karunaratne in the second over of Sri Lanka's innings, Umesh getting a full swing ball to curl back in from over the lost wicket and force the left-hander to play around his front pad.But he missed and reviewed Bruce Oxenford's lbw decision, a wasteda good referral given there was no inside edge, and that the ball it pitched on middle stump and had straightened down that line.

Pandya, who had brought up his contribution of half-century, off 48 balls, in the same Herath over, fell quickly after, finding deep square leg while going after another short ball from Kumara.
