The statement from Sterlite Copper COO Ramnath that Sterlite will be reopened in Thoothukudi has sent shock waves across the state. Lots of innocent civilians were protesting against the killer factory Sterlite copper in Thoothukudi, and the protest had been on for more than 90 days on a peaceful manner.
On May 22, the 100th day of the protest, it was turned violent by policemen who shot and murdered 13 innocent protesters, including young and old women. Besides, they had also thrashed people brutally, and still more than 60 people are injured, receiving treatment in hospital, and many others are missing and are yet to return home.
Following the strong protests and condemnation from various corners, the TN government had closed and sealed the Sterlite factory permanently. However within just 1 week of the government order, the COO of Sterlite, has said that Sterlite will be reopened and workers will be back to work soon. He added that currently maintenance works are going on, and since Thoothukudi is facing a tense situation, Sterlite will begin functioning once the situation ends. Ramnath said that people had never opposed the factory and that it was driven by several organizations that they are protesting.
